The once unthinkable is becoming a reality as Youngtown leaders consider disbanding the city and either returning it to the county or letting a nearby city take it over.
The problem is cash. The town with a population of 6,100 northwest of Phoenix has a limited tax base. It’s landlocked between Sun City and El Mirage with nowhere to grow or add a new development or a major shopping center.
Youngtown Mayor Mike LeVault tells The Arizona Republic last December’s decision to cut the police department saved the town from financial collapse, however, the mayor adds the city lacks the fiscal stability needed to ensure survival.
Through a series of employee cuts Youngtown’s workforce is down to 23 people.
