DATELINE: FALL RIVER Mass.
6/22/2012
A Fall River city employee has died after being thrown from a bucket truck while working on overhead traffic lights.
Authorities say 63-year-old Manuel Marques died at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence about six hours after the truck he was working in Tuesday was struck by a tractor-trailer. The impact threw him from the bucket about 20 feet to the ground.
Mayor Will Flanagan tells The Herald News that Marques was a 30-year employee with the city who will be “greatly missed.”
He was a signal operator for the police department.
The driver of the truck was cited for negligent driving and will be summoned to court at a later date.
Federal workplace safety officials are investigating. It was unclear whether Marques was wearing a harness.
